In this episode, Kyla invites Mary Pearson, a social worker and the author of the eye-opening book "Weighed Down: Unlearning the Lies Sold to Us About Our Bodies", to shed light on misconceptions surrounding body image.
Mary shares her personal journey and the passion that prompted her to write her book, offering fresh perspectives on the complex relationship we have with our bodies. She discusses the toxic expectations set by the media and weight loss industry, and the intriguing concept of being "body neutral".
Our conversation is an empowering start to questioning and disarming the deeply-ingrained stereotypes and pressures about body image that society places upon us. We delve deep into the societal issue of fat phobia, attempt to go beyond surface level and dissect the fear of being fat, which is deeply internalised but often projected externally.
Further, we discuss the economic realities behind these harmful narratives, how fear is monetised and how it capitalises on insecurities to promote various products and services.
Mary Pearson's experiences and wisdom bring home just how imperative it is that we dismantle the judgments based on physical appearance. We also ponder how age-related pressures compound body image anxieties and emphasise the journey towards self-acceptance as a path that requires patience and time.
Our ultimate aim is to impart the liberating mindset that everyone's body is their best 'as is', today and every day. We believe that listening to this thought-provoking episode may afford you the opportunity to confront your own biases and perhaps change your perspective on body image.

In this episode, we delve into the concept of Orthorexia, a fixation on eating healthily and an obsession with body image, which can lead to extreme behaviors and eating disorders like Anorexia.
The episode begins by asking listeners to visualise a pie chart describing who they are. This guide provides an understanding of how your thinking patterns can be dominated by food, weight, and body image. This exercise helps gauge the extent of your obsession and its impact on mental health and lifestyle.
Using intriguing statistics, the episode assesses time spent worrying about body image over a lifetime. This analysis reveals how a seemingly small percentage of your day spent stressing over body image accumulates over the years, encroaching on valuable time that could be spent on more meaningful pursuits.
The episode then introduces Orthorexia, explaining its place in the spectrum between dieting and Anorexia. In the process, the impacts on mental health, social interaction, and daily life are explained. The factors differentiating a healthy, conscious eater from an Orthorexic, including signs such as emotional distress when rules are broken and avoidance of social situations that do not match their strict diet, are discussed.
Critiques of societal normalization of Orthorexia, the tendency to equate thinness with health and the role of faulty perceptions in the manifestation of weight-related mental health issues also form part of this discussion. The conversation ends with an introspective message: It pushes listeners to evaluate whether a relentless pursuit of a healthy body at the cost of mental wellbeing and life-enriching experiences is worthwhile.
In addition to this deep dive into Orthorexia, listeners are invited to explore resources, including a Change Your Relationship with Food course and a journal/workbook available on Amazon. The online course is designed to help you reassess your relationship with food and understand it from a different perspective.

In this episode, we uncover the underexplored effects of weight loss on relationships. As a professional assisting individuals preparing for weight loss journeys, I have observed dramatic shifts in relationship dynamics. Dealing with everything from increased confidence and attention to discomfort and past trauma, I probe into how shedding weight can be a double-edged sword.
The influence extends to romantic relationships as well, with different impacts on long-term relationships vs newer ones.
A key factor is opening up discussions about physical and personal changes pre-weight loss to preemptively address relationship changes.
Delving into 'weight conflict', I explore how drastic weight loss can sometimes lead to self-sabotage out of discomfort with changes in the body and personality.
Adding to this struggle, I discuss the influence of friends and family comments, who may trigger doubts in the achiever, urging them to halt the weight loss process.
Recognising that weight loss journeys are distinct for every individual, I emphasize that with the right help and support, not only can weight loss be successful, but relationships can also improve as a result.
